Hi Elizabeth! I’m reading your article and it’s been very helpful! I froze my granddaughter’s placenta at birth and she’ll be 2yrs old in July. I’m going to plant it with a fig tree bc we love figs. This was such a lovely post! I am looking forward to planting my son’s placenta to celebrate his first birthday. I have a tree picked out–a beautiful oak tree in our front yard–but after reading a few posts, am worried about the potency of the placenta. Should I be concerned about planting the placenta beneath an older tree (30+ years is my guess)?

We did end up keeping it, we still haven’t planted it as our life took a crazy turn and just finally getting back on track. Through this, we just had our second baby, born last week. More prepared we had a plan for this one and plan to bury it with our other sons. Since we will be moving soon we have decided to pot it. We are looking at our local nurseries to find something either citrus or maple to plant with it. Any recommendations for soil or fertilizer brands?

Hi! Apologies for the delay and hope your birthing time is going wonderfully well. I do not have experience planting a placenta indoors! I cannot say with certainty, how well it would decompose in the soil indoors, whether or not there would be odour etc. Just something to consider – that this is an unknown! It is a human organ, and does breakdown in the soil, releasing nitrogen and ammonia. I would suggest you keep it in the freezer, and bring it out, buy a pot and tree in the warmer months – plant it all then. It can be outside for that first part and then moved inside in the colder months? Please circle back and update us! Good luck with your birth and postpartum time.
